On 16 May, 2012 President Barack Obama presented the country’s highest military decoration to the family of Army Spc. Leslie H. Sabo Jr., who was killed protecting fellow soldiers from an ambush in Cambodia during the Vietnam War, whose courage and complete disregard for his own safety saved the lives of many of his platoon members.
The Foreign Ministry of Romania summoned Oszkár Füzes, Hungary’s Ambassador to Bucharest on 16 May 2012. In the absence of the Ambassador, Ádám Balázs fulfilled the request as chargé d’affaires ad interim.
During his official visit to Argentina, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs János Martonyi met representatives of Hungarian communities. On 13 May the Minister attended a Mass to mark the 120th anniversary of the birth of Cardinal József Mindszenty (1892-1975) in the Mindszentynum Centre, which was established in 1979, and is one of the oldest institutions of the 30,000-40,000-strong Argentinian Hungarian community.

Parliament elected János Áder as President of the Republic on Wednesday. The politician received 262 votes in the secret ballot. 307 Members of Parliament collected their ballot papers.

Hungary will host this year’s Day of Remembrance of the victims of totalitarian regimes to be held with the participation of EU Member States on 23 August. Hungary will work together with the Hungarian National Council in Serbia and higher education institutions to help finance Hungarians' studies with scholarships, Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén said during a visit to Szabadka (Subotica) on Monday.
Under current rules, Slovakian citizens applying for citizenship of another country must renounce their Slovak citizenship – dual citizenship is not possible, even though this prohibition is in conflict with the Slovakian constitution. Robert Fico’s government has said that it plans to amend its Act on citizenship to legalise dual citizenship, but not for those applying for Hungarian citizenship.
The ‘Die Welt’ conservative German daily published a guest comment by Rupert Scholz, constitutional lawyer, former German Minister of Defence on the new Hungarian Fundamental Law. According to Scholz the ‘critical fault-finding’ the new Hungarian Fundamental Law has received is ‘surprising and groundless’.
